Fight Club: Off the Top of My Head (SPOILERS) ::sigh:: I'm almost -- but not quite -- ready to say that I've officially given up on hoping for eps without glaring, distracting plotholes. At 9 p.m. tonight there were only three eps left in the season and possibly the series. We're in sweeps. And *this* is what we get? Humorous in spots, certainly, but this ep could have been much, much better. What I liked: It all comes down to the Moose/Squirrel interaction, as usual. :) - Scully and Mulder playing their own form of charades as Scully figured out what Mulder's next slide was. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the first time that Scully has come right out and told Mulder that he dangles clues in front of her without giving her all the information? That had to be the best scene in the entire ep, by far. :) - "No , Sherlock." A Mulder line if ever there was one. - Scully at the prison answering her phone by saying "Mulder?" I appreciated that little taste of ScullyWorry. :) - Scully's little satisfied smile at Mulder when she brought the "other" Bert to the fight (ignoring my concern over *why* she brought him to the fight...). I think Scully has done more smiling this season than any other, and it's far overdue. :) What I didn't like: - The fight between "agent who looks like Mulder" and "agent who looks like Scully." I was very uncomfortable watching characters who looked like Mulder and Scully beat the crap out of each other. ::shudders:: (It *was* amusing having the slide with the two of them in the same hospital room. Was that a jab at fanfic? ) - And if that wasn't bad enough, I *really* didn't need to see the beaten-up Mulder and Scully at the end. Was that necessary, Mr. Carter? Having that as the last scene ruined the ep for me. What's got me puzzled: - Pretty much the entire plot. I understand that we've got two sets of fraternal twins, and having them meet up can cause unexpected things to happen. I can accept that. But if they knew that being in each other's presence caused mayhem, why didn't they agree to live in different areas? Because they both were after Bert? But Betty didn't seem to know who Bert was -- she mentioned that she only slept with him once. Or was Lulu after Bert #1 and Betty after Bert #2? In that case, wouldn't Betty have known that Bert #2 was in jail? How did both Berts wind up in the same geographic area? - How did Scully get Bert #2 out of a federal penitentiary, and without keeping handcuffs on him? - For that matter, why the hell did Scully bring Bert #2 to the fight, anyway? Last time I checked the idea was for them to keep Betty and Lulu apart from each other -- what was there to be gained by bringing the two Berts together? - Is this Chris Carter math? Two people in a country of 250+ million have a one in 27 million chance of meeting? I'd say the odds are a lot slimmer than that. - What was Mr. Saperstein doing in Washington at the end? At first I thought he was in the Kansas City field office with the M/S doppelgangers. And how did he manage to walk away from that melee apparently unscathed? - How did Mulder fall into a sewer without a) getting wet, and/or b) getting (obviously) hurt? It was daytime when he got sucked in, and nighttime when he climbed out. Unless I can wrap my brain around him wandering around in the sewers and coming back to the *very same* manhole, he must have been unconscious for hours. I'll stop there. I'm starting to get a headache. Really, I don't think we needed two humorous eps in a row at this point in the series. And I can't believe I'm going to say this, but next week's ep doesn't look all that strong either. I sincerely hope that a week from now I'm contemplating how wrong I was. OTOH, I'm *very* eager to see the season finale. Without mentioning any spoilers, I'm hopeful that it will kick ass (in the best possible way ). Sometimes... *sometimes*... CC can still make me very, very happy. :)
